Servant Scholars

Merritt Chesson

I am from Edenton, NC. This next year will be my fourth and final at Furman University. My major is in sociology, but my interests fall all over the humanities spectrum (psychology, philosophy, religion, communications, art, anthropology…).

I have been living at the Vista House for the past school year and am so pleased to be here for the summer as well, as a participant in the Servant Scholars Program. I love the idea of us sharing our work experiences and being stimulated through our readings, discussions, and relationships together. The structure of the program not only holds me accountable to follow through with reading material I wouldn’t have otherwise read, but I also anticipate it engaging me intellectually and calling me to be more thoughtful and reflective about the work we are doing this summer and my general understanding.

Over the course of this program, I am working with Safe Harbor, an organization providing shelter for victims of domestic violence. My time with Safe Harbor for the summer is divided between their two shelters (one in Greenville and one and Anderson) and their Administrative Office. My responsibilities include planning and facilitating children’s activities and care, answering crisis calls, gathering initial information from clients, clerical work, special projects, and more. Working with Safe Harbor is giving me insight into the workings of a social/non-profit organization, as well as exposure to counseling and general case-work – all of which are special interests of mine as I consider my own future career.

I am truly grateful to Furman Advantage for helping to finance the work I am doing this summer.

Some of my interests/hobbies include food (preparing… eating!), running, hiking, aerobics, reading, and working with scraps from magazines (as well other artsy-crafty projects).
