As a recent graduate from Furman University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Earth and Environmental Science I have found myself in a place of exploration in what I want out of this next step in life. Naturally, I love the outdoors, spending a large time of the day outside doing almost anything. One of my most recently discovered and most intense passions is growing things. I love being out in a garden getting my hands dirty and learning more about our human connection to the natural environment surrounding us, especially through what we eat. This love for gardening and growing relationships within a community led me to the Servant Scholars program and my internship with St. Francis not-for-profit hospital. The St. Francis Health System, part of the Bon Secours community, focuses on giving “good help to those in need,” not only through its health system but also through community outreach and ministries. I am working in their Community Ministries office focusing on their newly created Community Garden project, which was established in Spring 2009. I will be helping maintain the garden, hopefully start another one, help with outreach into the surrounding community, and learn through those I meet throughout this exciting and humbling experience.
